Shopping at York’s specialist and eclectic independents

Forget Betty’s Tea Rooms, there are many equally as good reasons to visit York. Top for me is the excellent shopping with many independents and boutiques that are impossible to find elsewhere. One of these is Cavendish Antiques and Jewellers on Stonegate. It specialises in art deco, Georgian and Victorian jewellery and is the place to go if you’re looking for a unique piece. The staff know what they’re talking about, and often have a story about where a ring came from or who might have worn it. More often than not it’s a place to browse around and dream in, so it may be best to leave the credit card out of arm’s reach.

Another unique shop around the corner on Petergate is the Cat Gallery. An acquired taste, I’m sure, but if you’re a cat person this is a delightful find. It sells an eclectic range of cat-adorned bags, books, cards, clothes, table and homeware, as well as treats for your feline friends. With so many independent shops succumbing to the dwindling high street, it’s cheering to see such a quirky, specialist shop stay the course.
